Climate Emergency Protest in Winchester
Friday 22 October 2021 @ 9:00 am
On Friday 22 October UNISON is staging a protest at 9:00am outside Elizabeth II Court on Sussex Street SO23 8BH in Winchester, where the Annual Employers’ Meeting of the Hampshire Pension Fund will take place. Join Unison members, Labour Party members and local climate campaigners to show the Pension Fund that your voice matters.
UNISON – the country’s largest trade union – is calling for the Hampshire Local Government Pension Scheme to stop investing members’ funds in environmentally destructive industries. We are calling on the board to make a firm commitment to align its investments with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global temperature rises to 1.5C.
In 2019 Hampshire County Council declared a climate emergency – two years later we are still waiting for them to take action. Comparable schemes have already shown that divesting from fossil fuels can be achieved in a way that protects fund members’ retirement investments and ensures a just transition for workers in carbon intensive industries.
We also estimate that some 20,000 members are currently disenfranchised from the scheme simply because they have moved outside of the county.
Remember, there is no retirement on a burning planet – the Pensions Board must act now!
