A Message of Support from Lord Chidgey

Southampton & Winchester Visitors Group are very pleased to have this message of support from Lord Chidgey of Hamble-le-Rice, Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Africa.

The government’s Nationality and Borders Bil goes to the Lords in early Januar.

“Too often in my work overseas as a professional engineer and latterly as an international parliamentarian, I witnessed the plight of displaced people, barely surviving in camps with little food and shelter. No schooling for the orphaned children, left instead to forage in the markets and fall prey to predators, abuse, and murder. From barges transporting thousands down the Nile out of Khartoum to South Sudan. From the slums of the townships around South Africa’s capital Pretoria, to the desperate poverty of the people of Dhaka in Bangladesh. Ordinary people, farmers, doctors, engineers, teachers, forced to flee for their lives, through political, military or climate turmoil.

That is why, like you and your colleagues, I am proud that the UK offers protection to those seeking asylum from Afghanistan, Syria, Sudan and elsewhere. Local people up and down our country are doing incredible things to make them welcome as they start their new lives and form part of their local communities.

To quote from the letter signed by some forty eminent citizens to our Prime Minister, including: Olivia Colman CBE, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley OBE, Juliet Stevenson CBE, Dame Emma Thompson CBE and many, many others: “Now is not the time to turn them away. Now is the time to offer or hand in kindness and protection.””
