Reclaim These Streets Online Vigil in Southampton

Megan Ball, Winchester Labour’s Women’s Officer

On Wednesday 3 March 2021 at approximately 9.30 pm, Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old living in Brixton went missing on her way home from a friend’s house. A Metropolitan Police Officer has been arrested on suspicion of kidnap and murder after Sarah’s remains were found.

The death of Sarah caused a ripple across the nation, resulting in an outcry from women that have faced violence and assault at the hands of men on our streets. Reclaim These Streets vigils were held around the country at the weekend to both mourn the death of Sarah and give space to discuss societal changes required to make our women safe again.

This war on women requires active input from all of us. Being a bystander is no longer good enough – we must all be active in the quest for true and genuine equality.

Megan Ball, Winchester and Chandler’s Ford Constituency Labour Party’s Women’s Officer, made a powerful speech at the Southampton Reclaim These Streets online vigil for Sarah Everard on Saturday 13 March 2021.
